Russian losses has been offset.
Japan likes Grana and export is increasing by 5 %
Grana Padano has landed in Japan and the sales in the Land of the Rising Sun were able to compensate for those lost after the embargo towards Russia. Here are the two sides of the coin of 2014 for the Consortium of Grana Padano, which exportation, anyway, has increased more than 5% compared to 2013.
“At the international food fair of Nagoya our stand was the most crowded – explains Stefano Berni, General Director of the Consortium – . We signed important agreements with shops and supermarkets which will distribute 45 000 forms a year, especially the 18 months seasoned that the Japanese particularly like.” They are willing to pay more than 25 euros per kilo, whereas in Italy it costs about 13 euros (between 9 and 10 euros for the 11 months aged Grana Padano, up to 16-17 euros for the 24 months aged). “Germany is still our best foreign customer, with about 25 % of exports, but here the difference is less than the Italian prices, even because 2 million Germans arrive each year along the Garda lake (the Consortium is based in Desenzano) and, although they are our best ” ambassadors”, they are very price conscious” adds Berni.
Grana is the most exported DOP (Protected Denomination of Origin) product in the world : popular in the US, Canada and Northern Europe, is becoming increasingly popular in China, New Zealand and Saudi Arabia. In 2014, one and a half million forms were sold abroad (600 million euros the value of production, 1 billion in sales), 34% of the nearly 5 million forms produced last year by the 135 cheese factories which are part of the Consortium.
The farms of the supply chain are 5.700, all in the provinces in the north of the Po (except those located in Piacenza) and they allocate more than 23 million tons of milk to the Grana Padano Consortium that, including all the satellite activities, employs 50 000 people .
”Since the beginning of the embargo towards Russia, prices fell down, partly due to the 20 000 forms designed to Moscow and remained in stock – said the director of the Consortium –. For 2015 we are counting on the Expo, which will have nutrition and food as central themes“.
